ABOUT:
Jake is an artist working between London and Florence, Italy. His interest in fine art began at a young age when his semi-nomadic family relocated to an Alpine village in northern Italy. Immersed in the country's rich artistic heritage and dramatic natural landscape, he developed an early appreciation for painting and the traditions of European art.
Following his family's return to England at the age of thirteen, Jake began studying oil painting under the guidance of painter Alan Rash. Inspired by the landscapes of Constable Country and the legacy of Alfred Munnings in nearby Dedham, he developed a deep connection to representational painting and the English landscape tradition.
He later studied Art and Design at Kingston School of Art, where he explored the philosophies and experimental practices of contemporary art. Drawn by the idea of creating "moving paintings," Jake went on to study Animation and Visual Effects at Falmouth University, broadening his understanding of visual storytelling, composition, and image-making.
Following his degree, Jake returned to his traditional oil painting practice. Seeking greater technical discipline and philosophical depth, he joined the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, where he continues his studies. There, he has undertaken rigorous training in the sight-size method of portraiture, working within a lineage shaped by masters including Van Dyck, Velázquez, and John Singer Sargent. This classical education continues to inform his contemporary practice, uniting careful observation with a lifelong fascination for light, atmosphere, and the enduring language of oil paint.
HOW TO COMMISION:
Commissioning a portrait: Portraits are made through the collaborated interaction between the sitter and the artist. The painting moves to its conclusion slowly and meticulously. The sitter is privy and symbiotic to the process, completely aware of the metamorphosis happening before them. Portraits are made from life under natural light where possible, otherwise made through a combination of sittings and photographic reference; dependent on the clients availability for sittings.
Commissions for both landscape and narrative pieces are also welcome. On Canvas, hardwood panels or Murals.
